How Fast Can a Honda CRV Go? – A Detailed Analysis!

Honda CRV is very popular among family SUVs. Because of the fierce competition in the SUV market, you have the same question as I do.

How fast can a Honda CRV go?

The Honda CRV can go up to 124mph on stock. You can get that speed up to 160mph through some modifications. They are- Turbocharger, Intercooler, Fuel Injection Kit, Brake Pad & Brake Disk. Getting more speed than that is not worth it as you’d have to upgrade the engine. More on the speed below.

Let’s now find out how fast a Honda CRV can go.

How Fast Does a Honda CRV Go?

Honda CRV is one of the best-looking SUVs out there on the market. Here is what Honda SUV looks like.

But how fast can this beautiful SUV go? The stock speed of Honda CRV varies by the variation of the trims. However, the 8 trims are divided into two variations.

The LX, Special Edition, EX, EX-L, and Touring are the 5 trims of the Honda CRV 2022. The stock top speed these trims can reach is 124mph. So, for the standard trims, the Honda CRV’s top speed is 199km/h.

While the number seems mediocre, it is actually impressive for an SUV.

The second variation is the unofficial trims, they’re called hybrid trims. If you opt for electric instead of gas for your trim, that would be the hybrid one.

The trims where you can opt for the conversion are- EX hybrid, EX-L Hybrid, and Touring Hybrid. The stock top speed for hybrid cars is 104mph. That is substantially lower than the normal ones.

That’s it for the stock speed of the Honda CRV (2022). To increase how fast a Honda CRV can go, you’ll need to make a few modifications. I’ll take you through those now.

How Can You Increase The Speed of the Honda CRV?

As I’ve mentioned before, you need to make some specific modifications to gain more speed. The essential modifications are-

Turbo Kit

This is where the actual magic happens. The turbo kit works by pushing more air to your engine after a certain point. That push will make your engine run faster, thus making your car go faster.

So, as far as modifications go, this is the most essential one for increasing the speed. Fortunately, turbochargers are available on the market.

However, there are a few things you have to look out for. They are-

Compatibility. The turbo kit must be compatible with your Honda CR-V. By compatibility I mean-

Let’s assume you want a substantial boost. Then you will have to pick up a turbocharger that is greater than the engine displacement. If you’re fine with a decent boost, pick one that is equal to the engine displacement.

Intercooled or not. Turbochargers require cooling of their own, most of the kits include the cooler. However, you will need one if it doesn’t.

Here are some of my recommendations for Turbochargers for your Honda CRV-

Intercooler

The intercooler is essential to cool the turbochargers. Most kits include them, but some do not. In case your kit doesn’t, you’re going to need one.

The job of an intercooler is to cool the turbocharger. Without it, the turbocharger will overheat and fail fast.

I would recommend you get a watercooler as your intercooler. It is more efficient at cooling the turbocharger.

Fortunately, much like turbochargers, this is widely available on the market. There is still one thing you have to look out for. It’s-

Compatibility. The intercooler must be compatible with your turbocharger.

Fuel Injection Kit

Your engine runs fast as a result of being turbocharged. That means your engine is also using more fuel in a short amount of time. So, you need fuel that is the best for your vehicles like Liqui Moly or Mobil 1

However, the stock fuel injection kit might not be able to keep up with more fuel use.

To sustain the higher speed, I would recommend you fit a larger fuel injection kit as well.

As expected, there are things you need to look out for in this case as well-

Injection Patten. The Honda CRV has its fuel injection pattern. The new fuel injection kit will have to match that. If it doesn’t your engine won’t run at all.

Fit Compatibility. The new fuel injection kit will have to fit in the place of the old one. Otherwise, you would not be able to use the kit at all.

Honda CRV may have fuel injection failure issues sometimes. So, make sure the drain plug is tightened for injecting fuel.

Brake Pad & Brake Disk

You are substantially increasing the speed of your Honda CRV. As a result, you will need enough power to stop it as well. That requires a new brake system.

Stopping the higher-speed CRV requires a stronger brake pad and disk. So, this is another modification you’ll have to make.

Do make sure the brake disk and pad are compatible with your Honda CRV trim. The disk must be compatible with the wheel, and the pad must fit in the caliper.

Enough about the modifications. I’ll now be talking about the increase in speed you can expect from these.

How Fast Will a Honda CRV Go After Modifications?

Depending on your turbocharger, you can expect a boost of 100hp going up to 150hp. Now I will do the calculation to get your top speed with the extra horsepower.

Top Speed Calculation

The formula I found has a few variables. They are- Drag coefficient, air density, engine power, and the area of the car.

The speed of a car relies on many factors. They are-

  • The horsepower of an engine.
  • The density of the air that the car drives through.
  • The air resistance the car faces while moving, is the factor known as drag coefficient. The area will be calculated with width and height. Because those are parts affected by the air resistance.
  • The area of the car determines the amount of resistance it will face.

All of the trims of the Honda CR-V have 190 horsepower at 5600rpm on the stock. So if I assume max modifications, the gained horsepower would be 150hp. So, now you get a total of 340hp.

So, your engine power is 340hp. The air density is 1.225 kg/m3. The area of the SUV is 3.13m². The drag coefficient is 0.36. The goal is to get the Velocity, in other words, the top speed of the car.

The formula these factors will form is-

 Engine Power = ½ x (Air density) x (Velocity)^3 x (Drag Coefficient) x (Area of car)
(340 x 745.7W) = ½ x (1.225 kg/m3) x (Velocity)^3 x (0.36) x (3.13m²)
253538W = 0.69 kg/m x (Velocity)^3
Velocity = 71.625 meters per second

Convert that to km/h and you’ll get 257.85 km/h, or 160 mph. Your top speed increases to 160mph (approx.). So, the modifications get you an increase of 36mph.

Safe Speed

There is always a safe speed depending on the kind of road you’re driving on. You can’t drive at 160mph all the time just because you can.

The table below elaborates on what speed you should maintain depending on the kind of road.

Type of StreetSafe Speed (in MPH)
Interstate Highway69
Residential Streets20
Rural Roads47

The numbers on this table are the average speed limits throughout all the States. Finally,  It’s now time to answer some frequently asked questions before concluding the article.
